Why Your VMS Needs Dynamic Resolution Scaling

Why Your VMS Needs Dynamic Resolution Scaling

Enhancement in security cameras technologies has led to the ability to record, transfer, view and storing high-resolution camera images in the cloud or on a server. Combined with the latest artificial intelligence, analytics and computer vision, surveillance and video management systems (VMS) these camera systems can effectively pinpoint and identify specific areas of interest in real-time.

Of course, there are potential pitfalls to recording, transferring, viewing and storing high-resolution camera images. High-resolution video takes up a lot of bandwidth and compression may remove valuable pixels needed for forensic discovery. Networks may not be able to support high-resolution video transfer resulting in slow client responsiveness. Areas of interest may be ‘lost in translation’ with the user unable to zoom into specific, and perhaps necessary parts of the transferred video. Theses pitfalls can lead to poor productive and negatively impact forensic discovery.

THE SOLUTION

Dynamic Resolution Scaling (DRS) was specifically developed by Salient to tailor the transfer of remote live video in such a way that it is optimized for viewing and sharing. When the user conducts a forensic search or pulls live video, they can scale the video to ‘fit’ the specific requirements of the receiving display and review images without latency or high bandwidth consumption.

DRS, exclusive to Salient’s CompleteView VMS platform, does the heavy lifting in alleviating these challenges and others, like latency and low bandwidth connectivity prevalent at remote sites or those with the bare minimum of connectivity.

HOW DYNAMIC RESOLUTION SCALING WORKS

In remote monitoring and investigations, using DRS, the VMS client automatically tells the server what size the image needs to be prior to transmission. Only the pixels seen on the screen are transferred, resulting in bandwidth savings of 90% or more as compared with the original camera stream.

For example: “Utilizing DRS, a 12 megapixel camera set to 10 frames per second may see a 95% decrease in bandwidth usage from the Recording Server to the Desktop Client:”

OTHER BENEFITS OF DYNAMIC RESOLUTION SCALING INCLUDE:

  • Reduced bandwidth consumption, especially beneficial to users with remote sites without robust or stable connections.
  • Significant bandwidth savings when users pull live and recorded video for transfer to other locations for investigation.
  • Remote investigations are seamless with Dynamic Resolution Scaling – with the resolution tailored to the viewing apparatus – smartphone, tablet, desktop or web browser, so users can view areas of interest clearly.
  • Users can playback and search while the exported video is simultaneously downloaded in high resolution for immediate discovery.

WHY YOU NEED DYNAMIC RESOLUTION SCALING

Dynamic Resolution Scaling is a differentiated capability in Salient’s CompleteView VMS platform that optimizes the responsiveness and quality for users streaming video while effectively managing available network bandwidth.

Oil and gas customers have relied on this capability to monitor critical infrastructure over satellite links; retailers have relied on this capability to switch between views from different sites and far more efficiently monitor operations from their SOCs; and customers across all verticals have seen value in this capability in being able to use web and mobile clients without any additional configuration, cost, or complexity to their deployments.
