AUSTIN, Texas – May 4, 2022— Salient Systems, a leader in open architecture video management systems, has announced that its CompleteView VMS has been deployed by the University of Kentucky (UK), providing the university’s Police Department with comprehensive situational awareness throughout its extensive campus network.

The largest university in Kentucky, UK is home to more than 30,000 students and 15,000 employees, three medical centers, 18 residence halls and two major sports facilities. UK public safety officials selected CompleteView Enterprise VMS as the university’s new video platform, to more easily manage the central video management system, tying together more than 3,000 cameras located on the main campus and at several satellite locations.

CompleteView VMS software provides the UKPD with the flexibility and scalability required to juggle campus-wide monitoring of ongoing campus activities and special events, such as sporting events and student move-in/out days. Two large video walls – one located at the UKPD Emergency Operations Center and another at Kroger Field, the university’s 61,000-seat football stadium – enable dispatchers to simultaneously view the feeds of the associated cameras. The software-centric approach has also provided UK with cost savings in both hardware and other resources in terms of system maintenance and upkeep.

“With Salient, we have moved into a more flexible and scalable software-based environment for video storage,” says Nathan Brown, deputy chief of UKPD. “This more virtualized environment has allowed us to no longer be so physically reliant on hardware, which requires a lot of upkeep. Now, we can pivot by increasing or decreasing storage without manipulating the entire system as a whole.”

This software-focused approach and ability for centralized video management has also helped the university to expand its network of cameras at off-campus, satellite locations, where hardware installations and bandwidth would have been obstacles with its previous system. UK keeps its bandwidth footprint low with CompleteView’s Dynamic Resolution Scaling feature, which automatically scales the video resolution at the server level to match the client – desktop, web client, or mobile device – ensuring that officers viewing video on their mobile device onsite can still view high-quality video to help determine the appropriate response without driving up connectivity costs.

“Large organizations such as the University of Kentucky demand a high degree of scale, flexibility, and power from their video management systems,” said Sanjay Challa, chief product officer, Salient Systems. “CompleteView is engineered from the ground up to meet those fundamental needs, as well as easily adapt to future needs, as the business of the organization continues to evolve.”
